slave-owning society (precedes feudal society 封建社會|封建社会 in Marxist theory)
以奴隶主占有生产资料并占有生产者--奴隶为基础的社会。人类历史上第一个人剥削人的社会。奴隶主是统治阶级，奴隶是被统治阶级。奴隶毫无人身自由，可被任意惩罚、买卖甚至屠杀。奴隶主为维护其统治，于是产生了国家。由于铁器的使用，以及大规模的简单协作，社会生产力比原始社会有很大发展，科学、文化、艺术也有很大进步。城市随之出现，并与广大乡村相对立。同时出现脑力劳动和体力劳动的分工和对立。到奴隶社会后期，阶级矛盾日趋尖锐，奴隶制度最终被封建制度所代替。
