①台湾中部高山湖泊。因有小岛将全湖分为北、南两半，其轮廓分别略似日、月得名。面积77平方千米。旅游、避暑胜地。②台湾高山族神话故事。两条恶龙吞食了太阳、月亮，世界一片黑暗。青年渔民大尖哥和妻子水社姐寻得金斧、金剪，斩除恶龙，放出太阳和月亮。两人分立潭边，日夜守卫，变成两座人形大山，永远保护光明。人们把此潭称为日月潭。
