place sb on a field of death and he will fight to live (idiom based on Sunzi's "The Art of War" 孫子兵法|孙子兵法[Sun1 zi3 Bing1 fa3]); to fight desperately when confronting mortal danger / fig. to find a way out of an impasse
It originally meant that when the army was placed in a situation where it was impossible to retreat and only died in battle, soldiers would march forward courageously and kill the enemy to win / The latter metaphor is to cut off the path of retreat in advance, you can make up your mind and achieve success
谓置于不战则死的境地﹐然后方能奋勇战斗﹐取胜得生。语本《孙子.九地》"投之亡地然后存﹐陷之死地然后生。"
