xǐ zhōu zhèn wèi yú dà lǐ shì de běi bù

喜洲镇，位于大理市的北部

Xizhou town sits to the north of Dali city

xī biān shì cāng shān dōng biān shì ěr hǎi

西边是苍山，东边是洱海

With Cang Mountain on the west and Erhai Lake on the east

nián yī gè míng jiào lín dēng de měi guó rén lái dào zhè lǐ

2006年，一个名叫林登的美国人来到这里

An American man named Linden came here in 2006

huā le nián de shí jiān

花了10年的时间

And in the next ten years

xiū fù le mín guó shí qī yī dòng yǒu qián rén de jiā zhái

修复了民国时期，一栋有钱人的家宅

He restored the house of a well-off family during the Republic Era

bǎ tā gǎi zào chéng le yī jiā tè bié de mín sù

把它改造成了一家特别的民宿

And converted it into a special hostel

jīn tiān wǒ lái dào xǐ zhōu bài fǎng le lín dēng

今天，我来到喜洲拜访了林登

Today I visited Linden in Xizhou

hé tā liáo le liáo tā hé zhè zuò bǎi nián lǎo zhái bèi hòu de gù shì

和他聊了聊他和这座百年老宅背后的故事

And he shared some stories of this old building

wǒ yǐ jīng zài xǐ zhōu dài le nián le

我已经在喜洲待了14年了

I've been in Xizhou for 14 years

bǎ wǒ men měi guó de gōng zuò fàng qì fáng zi dōu mài diào

把我们美国的工作放弃，房子都卖掉

We gave up our job and sold our house in the States

wǒ yī tiān zhì shǎo yào zǒu lù bù

我一天至少要走路18000步

I take at least 18,000 steps each day

gēn jǐ shí gè rén dōu dǎ gè zhāo hū gēn tā men liáo tiān

跟几十个人都打个招呼，跟他们聊天

And greet dozens of people, talk to them

wǒ jué dé wǒ hái huì dài nián

我觉得我还会待40年

I'd spend four more decades here

Hopefully

nián dài wǒ měi gè shěng dōu qù guò

I travelled around China in the 80s

wǒ fā xiàn dà lǐ yīn wèi shì yuán lái de chá mǎ gǔ dào

我发现大理因为是原来的茶马古道

And I found out that Dali is one stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road

fēi cháng hǎo kè fēi cháng bāo róng

非常好客，非常包容

Hence its hospitality and inclusiveness

suǒ yǐ zhè shì wèi shén me wǒ men jiù xuǎn le dà lǐ

所以这是为什么我们就选了大理

And that's why we decided to stay at Dali

nà shí hòu dà lǐ duì wài guó rén lái shuō hǎo xiàng shì yī gè fēi cháng shén mì de

那时候大理对外国人来说，好像是一个非常神秘的

Dali was a mysterious Shangri-La to foreigners

dà jiā dōu yào qù de shì wài táo yuán

大家都要去的世外桃源

That everyone had to go

xǐ zhōu yǒu gè lǎo yuàn zi

喜洲有110个老院子

There are 110 courtyards in Xizhou

dà bù fēn de xǐ zhōu cūn mín cóng xiǎo dōu zhù zài zhè xiē yuàn zi lǐ

大部分的喜洲村民从小都住在这些院子里

And most of the villagers grow up in these courtyards

xià tiān dōu shì shuǐ dào dào dōng tiān yǒu yóu cài huā

夏天都是水稻，到冬天有油菜花

Paddy in summer and rape flower in winter

yáng pǐn xiāng shì xǐ zhōu hěn chéng gōng de yī gè shāng rén

杨品相是（喜洲）很成功的一个商人

Yang Pinxiang was a successful businessman of Xizhou

yáng pǐn xiāng de zhái zi jiàn yú nián

杨品相的宅子，建于1948年

His house was built in 1948

dà mén bù shì yī gè pǔ tōng de bái zú fēng gé de yī gè mén lóu

大门，不是一个普通的白族风格的一个门楼

The gate is different from common Bai nationality gates

shì yī gè mín guó shí qī de

是一个民国时期的

It's of an Republican Era style

yīn wèi yáng pǐn xiāng tā zuò de shēng yì shì mǎi mài

因为杨品相他做的生意是买卖

As a businessman

tā jiù pǎo dào hěn duō dì fāng bāo kuò shàng hǎi

他就跑到很多地方，包括上海

Yang Pinxiang travelled to a lot of places, including Shanghai

bǎ tā kàn dào de yī xiē dōng xī

把他看到的一些东西

And he integrated his what he saw

hòu lái dōu róng rù tā de jiàn zhù tā de shè jì tú zhōng

后来都融入他的建筑、他的设计图中

Into his design

tā huì bǎ fèng huáng fàng dé bǐ lóng de wèi zhì hái yào gāo

他会把凤凰放得比龙（的位置）还要高

He put phoenix above dragon

hěn duō rén dōu jué dé zhè gè dài biǎo le bái zú rén duì nǚ hái zi

很多人都觉得这个代表了白族人对女孩子

It is said to be a representation of the Bai Nationality's habit

nǚ xìng yǒu yī zhǒng chóng bài de zhè yàng de xí guàn

女性有一种崇拜的这样的习惯

Of worshiping women

yǒu shí hòu huā yī gè xīng qī xiū fù

有时候（花）一个星期修复

Sometimes I spent a whole week on restoration

shuā yóu qī zhè gè shì wǒ qīn shǒu zuò

刷油漆，这个是我亲手做

Putting on lacquer, I do it personally

qì wèi bù shì hěn dà

气味不是很大

The smell is not so bad

duì wǒ jué dé tā qì wèi bù dà

对，我觉得它气味不大

Yes, I don't find it unbearable

tā mǎ shàng huì huī sàn diào

它马上会挥散掉

It volatilizes right away

zhè gè huì gàn dé bǐ jiào kuài

这个会干得比较快

This dries very quickly

zuì hòu nǐ jiù huì zhí jiē kàn dào tā de nà gè mù wén

最后你就会直接看到它的那个木纹

And then you can see the pattern on wood

wǒ men bù yào pò huài

我们不要破坏

We don't damage

yuán yǒu de nà xiē mù tóu zhè xiē mù bǎn

原有的那些木头、这些木板

All the original wood, panels

suǒ yǒu de mù diāo wǒ men dōu bǎo hù

所有的木雕，我们都保护

Woodcarving are protected

zhēn de hěn xīn kǔ shī bài le hǎo jǐ cì

真的很辛苦，失败了好几次

It hasn't been easy, we failed a few times

yáng jiā hái yǒu yī tào dú tè de jiào yù fāng shì

杨家还有一套独特的教育方式

The Yangs have their own way of education

yáng pǐn xiāng bǎ zì jǐ de chéng gōng zhī dào dōu kè zài le èr lóu de lán gān shàng

杨品相把自己的成功之道都刻在了二楼的栏杆上

Yang Pinxiang engraved his way of success on the second-floor rail

zhè xiē jiā xùn quán bù dōu bèi lín dēng bǎo liú le xià lái

这些家训全部都被林登保留了下来

And these family mottos are preserved by Linden

bǐ rú xīn shàng wú guò bù qù zhī shì biàn shì hǎo rén

比如：“心上无过不去之事便是好人”

Like, "a good man knows nothing that won't pass"

yì sī shì zài shēng huó zhōng zuò shì zuò rén bù yào jīn jīn jì jiào

意思是在生活中，做事、做人不要斤斤计较

Meaning that one shouldn't haggle over every ounce

hěn duō shì qíng xiǎng tōng le dé dào de biàn shì zuì hǎo de rén shēng

很多事情想通了，得到的便是最好的人生

Once you come around, you will be rewarded by life

除了修缮原本的建筑

Besides restoring the buildings

lín dēng bǎ zhè lǐ gǎi chéng mín sù zhī hòu

林登把这里改成民宿之后

After turning it into a hostel

jǐn liàng hái yuán yáng jiā dāng nián de shēng huó fāng shì

尽量还原杨家当年的生活方式

Linden also tried to recover the old lifestyle of the Yangs

ràng zhù jìn mín sù de kè rén

让住进民宿的客人

Allowing guests staying at his hostel

也能体验到当时有钱人家是怎样享受生活的

To experience the life of a rich family back them

当年，杨品相做了很多的公益活动

Yang Pinxiang was active in charity work

比如在喜洲建学校、建水电站

Building schools and hydropower stations in Xizhou

lín dēng jué dé zì jǐ zhù zài tā de jiā lǐ

林登觉得，自己住在他的家里

Linden thinks that since he is staying in his house

jiù bì xū àn zhào tā de biāo zhǔn lái shēng huó

就必须按照他的标准来生活

He has to live by his standard

lín dēng měi nián dōu huì yāo qǐng měi guó de zhōng xué shēng lái zhè lǐ zuò jiāo liú

林登每年都会邀请美国的中学生来这里做交流

Linden invites American high school students for exchanges every year

ào bā mǎ nǚ ér xué xiào de xué shēng

奥巴马女儿学校的学生

Students from the same school of Obama's daughter

zhuān chéng cóng měi guó pǎo dào zhōng guó de xǐ zhōu yī dài jiù shì gè yuè

专程从美国跑到中国的喜洲，一待就是5个月

Came to Xizhou and spent 5 months here

jù shuō yáng pǐn xiāng hěn xǐ huān shōu cáng gǔ wán

据说杨品相很喜欢收藏古玩

Yang Pinxiang was said to be a collector

lín dēng yě shōu jí le bù shǎo jiù wù

林登也收集了不少旧物

And Linden also collects

pèng dào gǎn xīng qù de kè rén jiù huì bǎ tā men dài dào tú shū guǎn

碰到感兴趣的客人，就会把他们带到图书馆

He takes guests who are interested to the library

wǒ yuán lái zài yún nán lǚ xíng shí dé dào de zhè běn shū

我原来在云南（旅行时得到的这本书）

I acquired this book during my trip to Yunnan

It was painted with mineral pigments

Beautiful

Though it was painted over one hundred years ago

zhè yǒu yī bǎi duō nián le

Xizhou rich businessmen loved it

Now in the Linden Centre

也常常举办这样的音乐会

Concerts like this are held on a regular basis

在民国时期

During the Republican Era

扎染是很多喜洲人日常生活的一部分

Bandhnu was a part of Xizhou daily life

yǒu qián rén jiā de xiǎo jiě yě jīng cháng cān yǔ yòng lái dǎ fā shí jiān

有钱人家的小姐也经常参与，用来打发时间

Wealthy ladies did it as a passtime

wǒ zài lǎo zhái lǐ dì yī cì tǐ yàn le zhā rǎn de quán guò chéng

我在老宅里，第一次体验了扎染的全过程

I tried bandhnu for the first time in the hostel

qīn shǒu rǎn bù zuò chū le zì jǐ xǐ huān de tú àn

亲手染布，做出了自己喜欢的图案

To dye a piece of cloth by myself

lín dēng měi tiān hěn zǎo jiù dào mín sù

林登每天很早就到民宿

Linden arrives at the hostel very early in the morning

zǎo cān de shí hòu hé suǒ yǒu de kè rén dǎ zhāo hū

早餐的时候，和所有的客人打招呼

He greets every guests during breakfast

zài dài zhù dà jiā qù zǎo shì

再带著大家去早市

And takes everybody to the morning market

cǎi gòu yī xiē dāng dì de shí cái

采购一些当地的食材

Procure some local ingredients

huí lái yī qǐ zhì zuò

回来一起制作

And cook them together

jǐ nián qián lín dēng yòu jiāng xǐ zhōu sì dà jiā zhī shǒu yán zi zhēn

几年前，林登又将喜洲四大家之首严子珍

A few years ago, Linden rented another house

wèi cì zi yán bǎo chéng suǒ jiàn de zhái zi zū le xià lái

为次子严宝成所建的宅子租了下来

It is the house built by Yan Zizhen, top of the four wealthy Xizhou families, for his second son Yan Baocheng

jìn xíng le èr cì de xiū shàn

进行了二次的修缮

And he did a repair on that house

zuò wèi mín sù duì wài kāi fàng

作为民宿对外开放

Now the house is open to guests

zì jǐ hé tài tài yě zhù le jìn qù

自己和太太也住了进去

And he lives there with his wife

tā yě yī zhí yāo qǐng péng yǒu lái xǐ zhōu

他也一直邀请朋友来喜洲

He often invites friends over to Xizhou

zhù jìn mín guó chéng gōng shāng rén de lǎo zhái

住进民国成功商人的老宅

To stay in the house of a successful businessman during the Republican Era

tǐ huì tā men de rén shēng zhé xué hé shēng huó fāng shì

体会他们的人生哲学和生活方式

To experience their lifestyle and philosophy

我有点像一个孤儿

I'm kinda like an orphan
