她其实跟很多闽南的老年女性都一样

Like many others of this group

任劳任怨、一味地付出

She's been willingly bearing the burden of hard works for all her life 10

可是对于年轻的孩子们来讲

But the children

They take it for granted

She often admires at Qing Er

比如说她的仗义，她的直接

At her upholding of justice and her being straightforward

And her boldness

It hits her heavily

I'm too old to do a lot of work

But I don't want my children to see me as a useless old woman

主要是来自于我自己生活过的那个乡村

From the village I lived in

My hometown is Quanzhou Fujian

“秀妹”其实就是我奶奶的名字

"Xiumei" is actually the name of my grandmother

xiǎo shí hòu gēn zhù yé yé nǎi nǎi

小时候跟著爷爷奶奶

When I was a boy

rán hòu kàn le shàng bǎi bù de xì qū piàn gē zǎi xì

然后看了上百部的戏曲片、歌仔戏

I watched hundreds of folk plays with my grandparents

pāi diàn yǐng de huà jiù hǎo xiàng shì bǎ suǒ yǒu de zhè xiē jī yīn

拍电影的话就好像是把所有的这些基因

And during the process of making a film

zhòng xīn jī huó le

重新激活了

These genes are reactivated

我每年春节过年回家

Every time I go back home for the Spring Festival

dōu huì dào chù qù luàn guàng

都会到处去乱逛

I would roam the city

Gua Ah-leh is a girl inside

fù yǔ zhè gè jiǎo sè yī xiē zī shēn shǎo nǚ de qì zhì

赋予这个角色一些资深少女的气质

And so her Xiumei is also very much of a girl

她去赎偷菜的青娥的时候

The scene where she ransoms Qing Er

tā men jiù bǎ nà chǎng xì jí xīng zuò le nà yàng yī gè dǎ nào

她们就把那场戏（即兴）做了那样一个打闹

They improvise and make it a playful act

黄昏相伴相依的两个老姐妹

Two best friends at their twilight years

那一瞬间会很打动观众

When she (Gua Ah-leh) learned that they were speaking the lines in Southern Fujian dialect

She became quite nervous

做了长达半年的准备

And she prepared for half a year

And wander around

问问别人这个蔬菜的价格

Asking about the prices of vegetables

肉的价格

And meat

cháng shì zhù qù róng rù dào zhěng gè de fēn wéi lǐ miàn

尝试著去融入到整个的氛围里面

Trying to blend in the atmosphere

qí tā rén jǐ hū quán bù dōu shì sù rén de yǎn yuán

其他人（几乎）全部都是素人的演员

The other characters are played by the villagers

wǒ men zhè gè cūn zi de huò gé bì cūn zi de

我们这个村子的，或隔壁村子的

From our village and the neighboring one

zhè gè diàn yǐng tā tàn tǎo le yī gè zhōng guó rén tè bié bù yuàn yì tàn tǎo de wèn tí

这个电影，它探讨了一个中国人特别不愿意探讨的问题

The film is touching on a subject

jiù shì shēng lǎo bìng sǐ

就是生老病死

That is always shunned by Chinese -- sickness and death

我每次从北京回到福建的时候

Every time I came back from Beijing

yī xiē zhǎng bèi huò lǎo rén bù gào ér bié

一些长辈或老人不告而别

Some of my seniors left without saying goodbye

jiù xiàng shù yè diào xià lái yī diǎn shēng xiǎng dōu méi yǒu

就像树叶掉下来，一点声响都没有

Like a leaf falling from a tree, silently

我每次回家都特别喜欢跟老人去聊天

I talk to the seniors when I'm home

我会发现他们对于自我的预设就是很固定

I can see they have a very limited expectation of themselves
