遇到了一个手无寸铁的小女孩

He encountered a defenseless little girl

tóng shí yù dào le guān bīng

同时遇到了官兵

He also met a soldier

yù dào le qiáng dào

遇到了强盗

And a bandit

duì xiǎo nǚ hái dōu yǒu yī xiē qǐ tú

对小女孩都有一些企图

The two were both up to something

tā jiù shì yī gè chī rén de shí dài

它就是一个吃人的时代

It was an age of cannibalism

xiá kè shì jiān shǒu zì jǐ de xiá yì jīng shén

侠客是坚守自己的侠义精神

Would the swordsman stick to justice and righteousness

hái shì shuō bǎo mìng

还是说保命

Or would he choose to protect himself

fàng qì qù jiù tā

放弃去救她

Instead of saving the girl

jiù shì zhè me yī gè jué zé de shì

就是这么一个抉择的事

He had to make a choice

其实是尝试了一次

It’s in fact an attempt

To make a stop-motion animation under the theme of Wuxia

In the history of Chinese animation

As we usher in the digital age

It may have disappeared

都不知道定格动画是什么

Many people even don’t know what stop motion animation is

zhè shì bù shì bù dài xì

这是不是布袋戏？

Is it a puppet show?

对于制作者来说

For animation makers

dìng gé dòng huà shì kàn dé jiàn mō dé zhù de

（定格动画）是看得见摸得著的

They can actually see and touch the frames

Unlike 2D animations

Which are totally virtual

才最终在我脑子里定型

On the basis of this sketch

也是片子的一个脉络

It’s also the storyline

cóng yǒu shè jì tú zhī hòu

从有设计图之后

After we had the images

kāi shǐ zuò dào jù jiē duàn

开始做道具阶段

We began to make the props

wèi le ràng pí fū kàn qǐ lái gèng yǒu zhì gǎn

为了让皮肤看起来更有质感

In order to make better skin

huì xuǎn zé yòng xì jiāo

会选择用矽胶

We chose to use silicone

wǒ men huì zài lǐ biān

我们会在里边

We made a metal framework

zuò lèi shì rén tǐ gǔ gé yī yàng de

做类似人体骨骼一样的

Inside the skin

jīn shǔ gǔ jià

金属骨架

Just like a human skeleton

yīn wèi dìng gé xū yào bǎi pāi

因为定格需要摆拍

Because the figures were physically manipulated

xū yào ràng zhī tǐ zài měi yī zhēn dōu dìng xíng

需要让肢体在每一帧都定型

Their limbs had to be fixed for each frame

liǎn hé tóu shí jì shàng shì yòng shù zhī zuò de

脸和头实际上是用树脂做的

The faces and heads were made from resin

huì yǒu hěn duō tào biǎo qíng

会有很多套表情

We actually had several faces for one figure

yīn wèi yào yī zhēn yī zhēn dì huàn

因为要一帧一帧地换

And we would change faces for each frame

gù shì ān pái zài táng mò zhè gè shí jiān duàn

（故事）安排在唐末这个时间段

The story is set in the end of the Tang Dynasty

què shí zuò le fēi cháng duō de kǎo zhèng

确实做了非常多的考证

We did a lot of research

shǒu xiān zuì duō de shì táng dāo

首先最多的是唐刀

First of all much effort was spent on studying Tang swords

wǒ men zài chá le hěn duō zī liào zhī hòu

我们在查了很多资料之后

After we read many documents

fā xiàn

发现

We found that

qí shí xiàn zài xiàn cún de táng dāo

其实现在现存的唐刀

There were few Tang swords in the world

jī běn shàng méi yǒu

基本上没有

Basically none

suǒ yǐ zài shè jì táng dāo de shí hòu

所以在设计唐刀的时候

So while designing

wǒ zuò le yī xiē xiǎng xiàng de xiū gǎi

我做了一些想像的修改

I made some changes to it based on my own imagination

kuī jiǎ tā shì chuān de

盔甲，他是穿的

The armor on his body

qí shí shì yú lín jiǎ

其实是鱼鳞甲

It was fish scale armor

wǒ men dōu shì zài yī xiē

我们都是在一些

We often got inspiration

táng dài de shí kè shàng qù zhǎo líng gǎn

唐代的石刻上去找灵感

From Tang stone carvings

zhì zuò shí jiān shì gè yuè

制作时间是10个月

The production lasted for 10 months

qí shí bāo hán le zuò dào jù de shí jiān

其实包含了做道具的时间

Including the time of making props

liú gěi pāi shè de shí jiān

留给拍摄的时间

In fact

qí shí bù shì tè bié duō

其实不是特别多

There was not much time for shooting

ér qiě dìng gé dòng huà yī dìng yào yī kǒu qì zuò wán

而且定格动画一定要一口气做完

And a stop-motion animation has to be finished without stop

zuì gǎn de shí hòu

最赶的时候

In the busiest days

shí jì shàng shì xiǎo shí

实际上是24小时

The shooting lasted 24/7

xiē rén bù xiē jī qì

歇人不歇机器

People took turns shooting and the machines were kept running

měi gè rén huì pāi xiǎo shí

每个人会拍8小时

One worked for 8 hours

pāi wán le xià yī gè rén dǐng shàng

拍完了，下一个人顶上

Then the next one took his turn

sān gè rén zhè me lún liú pāi

三个人这么轮流拍

The three of us shot in rotation

jiāng jìn yī gè yuè

将近一个月

The process lasted for nearly one month

hēi bái de yǐng piàn fēng gé huì gèng tiē jìn nǐ de huà

黑白的（影片风格）会更贴近你的画

Black and white are closer to my paintings

yě jiù gèng tiē jìn nǐ suǒ xiǎng de dōng xī

也就更贴近你所想的东西

And to what’s in my mind too

kěn dìng huì yǒu hěn duō wǒ xū yào xué xí de

肯定会有很多我需要学习的

Surely I have lots of idols to learn from

原剧本里边

In the original script

lǎo xiá kè sǐ de shí hòu

老侠客死的时候

The old swordsman wanted to say something

tā qí shí shì xiǎng shuō huà de

他其实是想说话的

When he was dying

qià hǎo dāng tiān pāi nà chǎng xì de shí hòu

恰好当天拍那场戏的时候

It happened that on the day for that scene

wǒ yī zhí yǎng de gǒu sǐ le

我一直养的狗死了

The dog that I had kept for a long time died

tā sǐ de hěn tòng kǔ

它死的很痛苦

It suffered a lot at the end of its life

nǐ zhǐ néng kàn zhù tā

你只能看著它

And I could only look at it

duō suo chōu chù sǐ qù

哆嗦、抽搐、死去

It shivered, twitched and died

wǒ kàn dào de gǎn jué

我看到的感觉

Then I put what I saw and felt

qí shí wǒ jiù fù yǔ zài xiá kè shēn shàng

其实我就赋予在侠客身上

On the swordsman

wǒ ràng tā yǒu yī xiē

我让他有一些

I gave him some convulsions

lín zhōng de jī ròu dǒu dòng

临终的肌肉抖动

Before his death

wǒ shì nián bì yè

我是2012年毕业

I graduated in 2012

jiù zhí jiē jìn rù dào dìng gé dòng huà xíng yè

就直接进入到定格动画行业

And my first job was in the stop-motion animation industry

dàn què shí dìng gé dòng huà gōng sī

但确实，定格动画公司

But to be honest

zài zhōng guó de zǒng shù

在中国的总数

There were not many stop-motion animation companies

qí shí shì bù duō de

其实是不多的

In China

shén zhì kě néng yī gè shǒu dōu néng shù dé guò lái

甚至可能一个手都能数得过来

You could even count them on one hand

cóng fēng yǔ láng qiáo kāi shǐ

从《风雨廊桥》开始

With the Bridge as the beginning

wǒ men cái jué dé

我们才觉得

We start to feel

hé zhōng guó dòng huà de dà huán jìng

和中国动画的大环境

That we have come into contact

是有一些接触

With Chinese animation industry

zhī qián wǒ men jué dé

之前我们觉得

Before

好像自己是一个圈外人

We always felt like outsiders

zuò fēng yǔ láng qiáo de shí hòu

做《风雨廊桥》的时候

The time when we made Bridge

包括我，其他的小伙伴

It was the darkest time in life so far

qí shí dōu shì huó dào mù qián wèi zhǐ

其实都是活到目前为止

Either to me

rén shēng de zhì àn shí kè

人生的至暗时刻

Or other partners

dà jiā qí shí dōu shì bào zhù yī gè

大家其实都是抱著一个

Actually

xiǎng gěi zì jǐ yī gè jiāo dài

想给自己一个交代

We all wanted to prove ourselves

fēng yǔ láng qiáo jiù shì yī gè

《风雨廊桥》就是一个

The Bridge is a reflection

dào zhè gè nián líng duàn de shí hòu

到30这个年龄段的时候

To people’s life

yī gè shēng huó de xiě zhào

一个生活的写照

In their 30s

rén dào sān shí

人到三十

At that age

nǐ huì miàn lín fù mǔ de jiàn kāng wèn tí

你会面临父母的健康问题

You have to take care of your parents’ health

miàn lín yī xiē jiā tíng de zé rèn

面临一些家庭的责任

And you need to support your own family

wǒ jué dé zhè xiē duō duō shǎo shǎo

我觉得这些多多少少

I think we have more or less brought the thoughts

dōu huì ràng wǒ bǎ tā men dài dào zhè gè piàn zi zhōng

都会让我把它们带到这个片子中

Into the animation

yǐ luàn shì de gù shì

以乱世的故事

And expressed them through such a story

qù biǎo dá chū lái

去表达出来

In a troubled time
