扉美术馆是坐落在社区里的一个非营利机构

FEI ARTS is a non-profit organization in a community

gāng hǎo yī qiáng zhī gé yǒu yī gè cài shì chǎng

刚好一墙之隔有一个菜市场

And it is located right next to a food market

wǒ men fā xiàn

We find that

cài shì chǎng tān fàn men měi yī gè rén de shǒu dōu yǒu bù tóng de gù shì

菜市场摊贩们，每一个人的手都有不同的故事

The hands of food market vendors have stories of their own

wǒ jiào hé zhì sēn shì fú jiàn rén

我叫何志森，是福建人

My name is He Zhisen, born in Fujian

xiàn zài shì zài huá nán lǐ gōng dà xué jiàn zhù xué yuàn rèn jiào

现在是在华南理工大学建筑学院任教

And now I'm teaching at the School of Architecture, South China University of Technology

tóng shí yě shì fēi měi shù guǎn de guǎn zhǎng

同时也是扉美术馆的馆长

And I am the curator of FEI ARTS

guò qù de nián tān fàn cóng lái méi yǒu lái guò měi shù guǎn

过去的11年，摊贩从来没有来过美术馆

During the past 11 years, the vendors never visited any art gallery

wǒ men yī zhí shuō shēng huó jiù shì yì shù

我们一直说生活就是艺术

We keep saying that life is art

nà wèi shén me tā men tān fàn bù lái měi shù guǎn

那为什么他们（摊贩）不来美术馆？

So what's keeping them away from galleries?

wǒ jiù jiào xué shēng gēn tān fàn yī qǐ shēng huó gēn gōng zuò le liǎng gè yuè

我就叫学生跟摊贩一起生活跟工作了两个月

I suggested my students to live and work with the vendors

yīn wèi tān fàn duì tā men de shǒu tè bié zhòng shì

因为摊贩对他们的手特别重视

As they cared a lot about their hands

wǒ jiù jiàn yì wǒ de xué shēng qù pāi shǒu zuò gè zhǎn lǎn

我就建议我的学生去拍手，做个展览

I asked my students to take pictures of their hands and make an exhibition

hǎi xiān dàng chāo gē de shǒu

海鲜档超哥的手

Chao who sells seafood

duō nián dōu shì fàn bái de

20多年都是泛白的

His hands have been swollen for almost two decades

yīn wèi tā zhǎng qī pào shuǐ

因为他长期泡水

Because his hands are always in water

jī ròu dàng qiū jiě de shǒu

鸡肉档邱姐的手

Qiu who sells chicken

yīn wèi tā zhǎng qī yòng dāo yòu shǒu yǒu yī gè fēi cháng dà de dāo jiǎn

因为她长期用刀，右手有一个非常大的刀茧

As she uses knifes on a daily basis, she has a huge callus on her right hand

lián yí de shǒu tè bié hǎo wán

莲姨的手特别好玩

Lian has the funnies hands

tā bù shí zì

她不识字

She can't read

měi yī tiān bǎ zhēng dào de qián shù zì xiě zài shǒu shàng

每一天把挣到的钱数字写在手上

So she writes her daily income on her hand

pāi yī zhāng xiāng piàn gěi tā de lǎo gōng kàn

拍一张相片给他的老公看

Takes a picture and sends it to her husband

wú jiè de qiáng shì sòng dōng lǎo shī de zuò pǐn

无界的墙是宋冬老师的作品

Borderless Walls is a work of Mr Song Dong

mén gēn chuāng shì hú tóng de fáng zi chāi le zhī hòu diū qì de

门跟窗是胡同的房子拆了之后丢弃的

The doors and windows are from depilated hutong houses

cóng běi jīng yùn guò lái de

从北京运过来的

And delivered here from Beijing

zhè gè shǒu jiù zài sòng dōng lǎo shī de qiáng shàng zhǎn le yī tiān

这个手就在宋冬老师的墙上展了一天

And the hands were put on exhibition for one day on Song's walls

wǒ hěn jì dé yī gè mài hǎi xiān de yī gè ā yí

我很记得，一个（卖）海鲜的一个阿姨

I remembered the seafood seller

nián lái dì yī cì wèi le yī gè gēn zì jǐ shēng huó yǒu guān xì de zhǎn lǎn

11年来，第一次为了一个跟自己生活有关系的展览

For the first time in 11 years

lái dào le měi shù guǎn

来到了美术馆

She came to a gallery for an exhibition related to her

rán hòu suǒ yǒu tān fàn dōu guò lái le

然后，所有摊贩都过来了

And then all vendors came

yī qǐ wán chéng le zhè gè bù zhǎn

一起完成了这个布展

And together finished setting up the exhibition

dì èr tiān yī gè tān fàn guò lái

第二天一个摊贩过来

And the second day a vendor came by

shuō zhè gè zhào piàn kě bù kě yǐ gěi wǒ men lǐng huí qù

说：这个照片可不可以给我们领回去

And asked if he could take back his picture

fàng dào wǒ men de tān wèi shàng

放到我们的摊位上？

And hang it over his booth

jiē xià qù suǒ yǒu tān fàn zì fā dì zài cài shì chǎng bù zhǎn

接下去所有摊贩自发地在菜市场布展

Next thing we know, all vendors put on an exhibition together

bǎ shǒu gēn yíng yè zhí zhào fàng zài le yī qǐ

把手跟营业执照放在了一起

Placing their hands next to their business license

nà yī shùn jiān wǒ jué dé wǒ men de zuò pǐn cái gāng gāng kāi shǐ

那一瞬间，我觉得我们的作品才刚刚开始

That moment was the real start of our work

tā men yuán běn yǐ wèi

他们原本以为

They thought

tā men zhǐ shì jì shēng zài shè qū lǐ de yī qún rén

他们只是寄生在社区里的一群人

That they were living off the community

zhè gè zuò pǐn ràng tā men zǒu chū le cài shì chǎng

这个作品，让他们走出了菜市场

But the work pulled them out of the market

cān yǔ dào shè qū lǐ de yī xiē huó dòng

参与到社区里的一些活动

And encouraged them to participate in community activities

nián dǐ wǒ men fā qǐ le wú jiè bó wù guǎn jì huà

2017年底，我们发起了无界博物馆计划

In the end of 2017, we initiated the borderless museum project

tà rù dào zhè gè shè qū de shí hòu nǐ jiù tà rù le měi shù guǎn

踏入到这个社区的时候，你就踏入了美术馆

As soon as you set foot in the block, you are in the gallery

shēng huó zài shè qū lǐ de rén

生活在社区里的人

Those who live here

tā men yòng zì jǐ de chuàng zào lì huò zhì huì

他们用自己的创造力或智慧

Reach the full potential of the space

qù lì yòng zhè lǐ de kōng jiān

去利用这里的空间

With their creativity and wisdom

bǐ rú shè qū de ā yí

比如，社区的阿姨

Such as the senior ladies used bricks and rocks

yòng zhuān kuài shí tóu jiù bǎi le yī gè tā men dǎ pái de zhuāng zhì

用砖块，石头，就摆了一个他们打牌的装置

To put in place an installation where they can play cards

tè bié hǎo wán

特别好玩

It is so much fun

wǒ men fā dòng guò yī gè jiào yí dòng de měi shù guǎn

我们发动过一个叫移动的美术馆

And we also did one called The Moving Gallery

yǐ chuáng wèi méi jiè

以床为媒介

Where beds were used as the media

shè qū de jū mín huì guò lái jiù zài chuáng shàng yě cān

社区的居民会过来，就在床上野餐

Those living in the neighborhood picnicked on beds

zài chuáng shàng shuì jué zài chuáng shàng kàn diàn yǐng

在床上睡觉，在床上看电影

Slept on beds and watched movies on beds

chuáng jiù biàn chéng le yī gè yí dòng de gōng gòng kōng jiān

床就变成了一个移动的公共空间

Beds thus became a moving public space

wǒ men měi yuè huì zǔ zhī yī cì jū mín zhǒng zhí

我们每月会组织一次居民种植

We organize monthly planting activities

gè zhǒng gè yàng de róng qì

各种各样的容器

In all kinds of containers

mǎ tǒng a yù gāng xiāng zi zhuō zi

马桶啊，浴缸，箱子，桌子

Toilets, bathtubs, boxes, tables

dōu zhǒng mǎn le zhí wù

都种满了植物

All were planted

zhī qián wán quán gēn zì jǐ shēng huó méi yǒu guān xì de yī gè chǎng suǒ

之前完全跟自己生活没有关系的一个场所

So it's like an arena which had nothing to do with my life

biàn dé wǒ de qíng gǎn wǒ de jì yì dōu róng rù dào lǐ miàn le

变得我的情感，我的记忆都融入到里面了

Turned into a place filled with my feelings and memories

měi jǐ gè yuè wǒ men huì zuò yī cì bǎi jiā yàn

每几个月，我们会做一次百家宴

Every several months, we put on a collective meal

yǒu huán wèi gōng rén tān fàn jū mín yì shù jiā xué zhě

有环卫工人、摊贩、居民、艺术家、学者

Sanitation workers, vendors, neighbors, artists, scholars are invited

jīn tiān shì dì yī cì tān fàn zì jǐ zuò cài

今天是第一次摊贩自己做菜

Today is the first time that vendors cook

duān guò lái dào měi shù guǎn gēn shè qū lǐ de jū mín yī qǐ chī fàn

端过来到美术馆跟社区里的居民一起吃饭

And come to eat with the neighbors

wǒ men zhēn zhèng de shì bǎ měi shù guǎn zuò chéng le jiē tóu měi shù guǎn

我们真正的是把，美术馆做成了街头美术馆

We really take gallery to the street

duì zhè yī xiē qún tǐ

对这一些群体

These people

wǒ men dōu huì jué dé tā men shì hěn ruò xiǎo de hěn dǐ céng de

我们都会觉得他们是很弱小的 ，很底层的

Are usually deemed as underprivileged

qí shí tā men bǐ wǒ men yǒu gèng duō dòng rén de gù shì

其实，他们比我们有更多动人的故事

While in fact, they have even more touching stories than us

néng ràng bù tóng jiē céng de rén xiāng hù lǐ jiě

能让不同阶层的人，相互理解

To build mutual understanding across classes

zhēn de shì tài nán le

真的是太难了

Is hard

wǒ jué dé tōng guò yī gè zhè yàng zi de zuò pǐn kě yǐ gǎi shàn tā men

我觉得通过一个这样子的作品，可以改善他们

Art projects like this are set out to improve the situation

suǒ yǐ wǒ jué dé měi shù guǎn zuì zhōng de mù de shì

所以我觉得，美术馆最终的目的是

So I think the ultimate end of a gallery

zěn me bǎ tā men lián xì zài yī qǐ

怎么把他们联系在一起

Is to connect people

wǒ jué dé zhè jiù shì yì shù hěn zhòng yào de yī gè lì liàng

我觉得这就是艺术很重要的一个力量

That's the power of art
