My buildings have a distinctive feature

我不贴瓷砖，不用大理石

I don’t use tiles or marble

wǒ yòng hěn dà liàng de yuán mù tā bù huì huài

我用很大量的原木，它不会坏

I use a large amount of wood which doesn’t go bad

wǒ de jiàn zhù néng gòu zài nián yǐ hòu

我的建筑能够在100年以后

My buildings can exist 100 years later

shén zhì nián tā dōu hái cún zài

甚至300年它都还存在

Or even 300 years later

我希望的建筑能够担负一种使命

I hope that building is able to play an important role

I’m an independent architect

30年前从事服装

I worked in the clothing industry 30 years ago

因为对建筑有一份不一样的热情

Due to my passion for architecture

suì yī tóu zāi jìn qù zhòng xīn xué xí jiàn zhù

（33岁）一头栽进去重新学习建筑

I turned to architecture at the age of 33 and started from scratch

cóng gōng dì de gōng jiàng kāi shǐ zuò qǐ

从工地的工匠开始做起

I began as a worker at construction sites

nà gè shí hòu cóng rì běn huí lái

那个时候从日本回来

When I went back from Japan

xiǎng yào zuò qīng shuǐ hùn níng tǔ

想要做清水混凝土

I wanted to do bare concrete

fǎng biàn quán tái wān méi yǒu rén huì zuò

访遍全台湾，没有人会做

I sought through Taiwan but no one could do it

zuì hòu zì jǐ tiào xià qù zì jǐ kāi gōng sī

最后自己跳下去，自己开公司

So eventually I founded my own company

yú guāng dǎo hěn nán dé zài tái wān de ān píng qū de hǎi biān

渔光岛很难得，在台湾的安平区的海边

Yuguang Island is in Anping, Taipei, and it’s a rare place in Taiwan

shè jì zì jǐ de zì zhái de shí hòu

设计自己的自宅的时候

When I designed my own house

wǒ jǐ hū shè jì le jǐ gè fāng àn

我几乎设计了20几个（方案）

I had over 20 plans

chà bù duō liù nián

差不多六年

And the process lasted for around 6 years

tǔ dì de miàn jī shì píng yuē

土地的面积是266坪（约880㎡）

The land covers an area of about 880m2

tā shì yī gè zhèng sān jiǎo xíng

它是一个正三角形

It’s a regular triangle

dì xià shì shì píng

地下室是40坪

The basement is around 132m2

yī lóu píng èr lóu píng sān lóu píng

一楼30坪（99㎡），二楼20坪（66㎡），三楼10坪（33㎡）

The first floor is 99m2; the second floor is 66m2; and the third floor 33m2

dì yī céng lóu yǒu yī gè xiǎo kè tīng gēn cān tīng chú fáng

第一层楼有一个小客厅，跟餐厅厨房

There’s a small living room, a dining room and a kitchen on the first floor

hái yǒu yī jiān wǒ de wò shì hé xiǎo shū fáng

还有一间我的卧室和小书房

And my bedroom and study

yǒu yī tiān rú guǒ wǒ men de xíng dòng bù biàn de shí hòu

有一天如果我们的行动不便的时候

If one day I have mobility difficulties

nà jiù kě yǐ zhù zài yī lóu jiù kě yǐ le

那就可以住在一楼就可以了

I can just live on the first floor

èr lóu de míng xiǎng kōng jiān shì tà tà mǐ de pào chá shì

二楼的冥想空间是榻榻米的泡茶室

The tea room with tatami on the second floor is the place where I meditate

yī gè rén pào chá hē chá shì yī jiàn hěn xiǎng shòu hěn shū fú de shì qíng

一个人泡茶、喝茶是一件很享受很舒服的事情

It’s enjoyable and comfortable for me to make tea and drink tea alone

wǒ běn shēn shì xìn fèng fú jiào shèn zhōng zhuī yuǎn

我本身是信奉佛教，慎终追远

I believe in Buddhism. We should respect our parents and ancestors

wǒ jiù fàng le yī gè fú tóu zài sān lóu shàng miàn

我就放了一个佛头在（三楼）上面

I place a Buddha head statue on the third floor

yě shì yī gè xiū xíng de dì fāng

也是一个修行的地方

That’s where I practice as well

dì xià shì shì wǒ gōng zuò de dì fāng

地下室是我工作的地方

The basement is where I work

wǒ huì bǎ lián zi lā xià lái bǎ mén guān qǐ lái fàng zhù yīn lè

我会把帘子拉下来，把门关起来，放著音乐

I would close the curtains, close the door and play some music

yǒu hěn duō jiàn zhù shī yī mèi dì wèi le tā de lǐ xiǎng ér shè jì

有很多建筑师一昧地为了他的理想而设计

Lots of architects design only for their ideas

jiù xiàng bái sè kōng jiān

就像白色空间

It’s like a white space

bì xū hěn zhàn zhàn jīng jīng dì bǎo chí yī gè hěn gàn jìng de chǎng suǒ de shí hòu

必须很战战兢兢地保持一个很干净的场所的时候

Which you need to carefully keep it clean

wǒ jué dé méi yǒu rén wèi

我觉得没有人味

I think that’s not friendly for human

nǐ xiǎng yào zuò xià lái jiù zuò xià lái

你想要坐下来就坐下来

When you feel like sitting down, you sit down

yī fú tuō le jiù suí biàn fàng

衣服脱了就随便放

When you take off your clothes, you can put them anywhere

hěn qiè yì hěn zì yóu de yī gè jiā

很惬意很自由的一个家

It should be like home where you feel relaxed and free

wǒ cháng cháng jìn lái jiù shì yǎng gǒu wèi yú

我常常进来就是养狗、喂鱼

Usually when I come back, I first feed my dog and fishes

jiǎn huā huā cǎo cǎo rán hòu jiù xǐ gè zǎo

剪花花草草，然后就洗个澡

Then trim the plants and take a bath

qù tǐ huì zhēn zhèng de shēng huó shì shén me

去体会真正的生活是什么

To experience what real life is

wǒ dōu bǎ zì jǐ dāng bái lǎo shǔ

我都把自己当白老鼠

I take myself as a mouse

nǐ yào shè jì zì jǐ néng gòu hěn shū shì shēng huó de jiàn zhù de shí hòu

你要设计自己能够很舒适生活的建筑的时候

Only when you’re able to design a building for yourself to live comfortably

nǐ cái néng gòu qù shè jì gěi nǐ de yè zhǔ

你才能够去设计给你的业主

Then you’re capable of designing for your clients

yú guāng dǎo shàng miàn wǒ qù gài le yī gè máo wū de mín sù

渔光岛上面，我去盖了一个“毛屋”的民宿

On the Yuguang Island, I built a homestay named ‘Mao House’

wǒ jīng yíng le bā nián měi yī nián dōu péi hěn duō qián

我经营了八年，每一年都赔很多钱

I’ve been running it for 8 years and losing money each year

wǒ zuì dà de mù de shì yào ràng

我最大的目的是要让

My main purpose is to let people of the same taste as me

He creates a type of building which provides a different lifestyle for human

qīng shuǐ hùn níng tǔ shì yī gè jì shù xìng fēi cháng gāo de yī zhǒng gōng fǎ

清水混凝土，是一个技术性非常高的一种工法

Bare concrete is a construction method with strict technical requirements

tā bù què dìng yīn sù tài duō

它不确定因素太多

It has too many uncertainties

fēi cháng cháng shī bài

非常常失败

It fails very often

bǐ rú lái jiǎng wǒ men míng tiān yào guàn jiāng

比如来讲我们明天要灌浆

For example, if we’re going to grout tomorrow

nà gè shí hòu dōu yào qù miào lǐ bài bài

那个时候都要去庙里拜拜

We would go to pray for luck in the temple

hái méi yǒu jiē chù dào ān téng lǎo shī de shí hòu

还没有接触到安藤老师的时候

Before I came into contact with Mr. Ando

wǒ zǒng gòng jīng guò le wǔ cì de chuàng xīn

我总共经过了五次的创新

I’d innovated for 5 times

měi yī cì dōu tuī fān zì jǐ

每一次都推翻自己

And I totally denied myself every time

It was not until 2002

cái dé yǐ dào ān téng shì wù suǒ qù cān yǔ gōng zuò xué xí

才得以到安藤事务所去参与工作、学习

That I had the chance to work and study in Ando Studio

Our works speak for themselves

When you see people open their eyes wide
