从2016年的9月份开始拍摄
I started shooting in September, 2016

一共前前后后拍摄了405位患者(和家属)
I’ve shot 405 patients(and their family) in total

I asked them

“人这一辈子什么最重要”
‘What’s the most important thing in life to you’

‘At which moment do you feel the happiest’

2016年的某一天
It was one day in 2016
wǒ zhèng zài chá fáng de shí hòu
我正在查房的时候
I was making the rounds of the wards
yǒu yī gè lǎo rén jiā zài liáo tā guò qù de yī xiē wǎng shì
有一个老人家，在聊他过去的一些往事
There was an old man talking about his past
rán hòu tū rán jiān jiù xiǎng dào qí shí měi yī gè lǎo rén jiù shì yī bù lì shǐ
然后突然间就想到其实每一个老人就是一部历史
Then suddenly it occurred to me that each old man is a history
nà me wǒ xiǎng qù wā jué yī xià zhè yàng yī gè bǎo kù
那么我想去挖掘一下这样一个宝库
I wanted to excavate the treasures
wǒ pāi shè de dì yī wèi huàn zhě
我拍摄的第一位患者
The first patient I shot
yīn wèi fèi ái zhè gè qíng kuàng zhù yuàn de
因为肺癌这个情况住院的
Got in hospital because of lung cancer
měi tiān kàn dào tā dōu shì xiào hē hē de
每天看到他都是笑呵呵的
But he was always cheerful when I saw him
tā zài shí nián qián jiù yǐ jīng què zhěn wèi shèn ái le
他在十年前就已经确诊为肾癌了
He was diagnosed with kidney cancer ten years ago
dāng shí shǒu shù tè bié chéng gōng
当时手术特别成功
The operation was really successful
yǐ jīng sǐ guò yī cì le yú shēng de měi yī tiān tā dōu shì zhuàn de
已经死过一次了，余生的每一天他都是赚的
He had already died once and each day of his rest life was a gift
zhè shì tā de yuán huà gēn wǒ shuō de
这是他的原话跟我说的
This is what he told me
tā de nǚ ér zài cān jiā zhōng kǎo de shí hòu fā huī shī lì le
他的女儿在参加中考的时候发挥失利了
His daughter failed in the entrance examination of senior high school
hòu lái dé le jīng shén fēn liè zhèng
后来得了精神分裂症
And got schizophrenia later
zhè shì ràng lǎo rén jiā tè bié tè bié yí hàn
这是让老人家特别特别遗憾
He felt very sorry about that
yě shì tè bié tè bié zì zé de yī jiàn shì qíng
也是特别特别自责的一件事情
And also very guilty
liǎng gè yuè zuǒ yòu lǎo rén jiā jiù lí shì le
两个月左右，老人家就离世了
About two months later, he passed away
rán hòu wǒ jiù zhèng zhòng dì bǎ zhè zhāng zhào piàn jiāo dào le tā jiā lǐ rén
然后我就郑重地把这张照片交到了他家里（人）
And I handed over the picture to his family solemnly

每个人给的答案都不一样
Everyone gave a different answer

一个小学的老师
A primary school teacher said
zuì yí hàn de yī jiàn shì jiù shì tā méi yǒu xiàng bié rén yī yàng néng gòu zhù shū lì zuò
最遗憾的一件事就是他没有像别人一样能够著书立作
What made him the most regretful was that he was unable to write a book
shàng hǎi de yī gè lǎo cái fèng
上海的一个老裁缝
An old tailor from Shanghai said
zuì yí hàn de shì qíng jiù shì méi yǒu néng dào tái wān qù gěi tā de gē gē sòng zhōng
最遗憾的事情就是没有能到台湾去给他的哥哥送终
What made him the most regretful was that he was unable to attend his brother’s funeral in Taiwan
wǒ zhī qián zài jí zhěn shàng jiē zhěn le yī gè bìng rén
我之前在急诊上接诊了一个病人
I had an emergency patient
tā shì yī gè jié cháng ái bàn quán shēn zhuǎn yí de yī gè bìng rén
他是一个结肠癌伴全身转移的一个病人
Who had colon cancer with metastasis
tā yí shū yǐ jīng xiě hǎo le zhè cì lái jiù shì yīn wèi tā fú yào zì shā le
他遗书已经写好了，这次来就是因为他服药自杀了
He had finished his wills and he was sent to hospital because of overdose
wǒ jīn tiān huì pāi dào zhè wèi bìng rén de nǚ ér
我今天会拍到这位（病人的）女儿
Today I’m going to shot the patient’s daughter

她作为我的第406位受访者
She is my 406th interviewee

从父亲生癌症到现在这个情况，已经有三年的这个时间
It’s been 3 years since my father was diagnosed with cancer
tā běn rén huà liáo duō cì liǎng gè dà dāo
他本人化疗30多次，两个大刀
He received chemotherapy for over 30 times and two major operations
suǒ yǐ bǎo shòu jiān kǔ jiān áo
所以饱受艰苦，煎熬
So he suffered a lot
lǎo yé zi yě gēn wǒ jiǎng guò zhōng guó wèi shén me méi yǒu ān lè sǐ
老爷子也跟我讲过，中国为什么没有安乐死
He also asked why there was no euthanasia in China
nǐ yǒu méi yǒu kàn dào tā dāng shí xiě yí shū de chǎng jǐng
你有没有看到他当时写遗书的场景？
Did you see him writing the wills

但是他写完的那个场景在那边
But I saw the scene when he had finished it

就是一个小板凳上面，还放著他一支笔和一只老花眼镜
There was a small stool upon which a pen and a pair of presbyopic glasses were placed

那是什么时候写的？
When did he write it

应该就是病危前一个晚上吧
It should be the night before the emergency

他就是自己觉得可能安详走掉的时候
He might think he could leave in peace
tā bǎ nà zhāng zhǐ jiù fàng zài zì jǐ de xiōng qián
他把那张纸就放在自己的胸前
He put that piece of paper on his chest

“不要抢救我”
‘Do not save me’
suǒ yǒu de rén miàn duì zì jǐ de sǐ wáng měi gè rén dōu shuō bù pà
所有的人（面）对自己的死亡，每个人都说“不怕”
Everyone said they were not afraid death
yǒu hěn duō bìng rén shì zhǒng liú wǎn qī de bìng rén
有很多病人是肿瘤晚期的病人
Lots of patients had advanced tumors
duì tā lái jiǎng sǐ wáng shì yī zhǒng jiě tuō
对他来讲死亡是一种解脱
Death meant relief to them
wǒ wèn tā men rén zhè yī bèi zi zuì zhòng yào de shì shén me
我问他们，人这一辈子最重要的是什么
I asked them ‘what’s the most important thing in life’
tā men huì huí dá wǒ shì jiàn kāng shì kuài lè shì xìng fú
他们会回答我“是健康，是快乐，是幸福”
They answered ‘health’, ‘joy’, ‘happiness’
méi yǒu yī gè rén shuō shì jīn qián
没有一个人说“是金钱”
Nobody said ‘money’
dàn shì duì qián nà zhǒng yī lài huò duì qián de yī zhǒng kě wàng
但是对钱那种依赖或对钱的一种渴望
But the reliance on or desire for money
qí shí hái shì cún zài de
其实还是存在的
Still existed
ràng wǒ zuì zuì xīn tòng de
让我最最心痛的
What broke my heart the most
suì de yī gè fèi ái de yī gè nián qīng huàn zhě
44岁的一个肺癌的一个年轻患者
Was the 44-year-old patient with lung cancer
dào zuì zhōng tā dōu bù zhī dào zì jǐ dào dǐ shì shén me jí bìng
到最终，他都不知道自己到底是什么疾病
He didn’t know what disease he had until the last moment
zài sān gè yuè de shí jiān lǐ miàn
在三个月的时间里面
In those three months
cóng yī gè huó bèng luàn tiào de shēng lóng huó hǔ de yī gè zhōng nián nán xìng
从一个活蹦乱跳的，生龙活虎的一个中年男性
From an alive and kicking middle-age man
dào shòu gǔ lín xún zuì hòu lí kāi wǒ men
到瘦骨嶙峋，最后离开我们
He became bony and left us in then end
tā méi yǒu liú xià rèn hé yī jù yí yán
他没有留下任何一句遗言
He left no words
tā de qī zi rán hòu yě shì zài quán chéng de pāi shè guò chéng dāng zhōng dōu shì zài liú lèi
他的妻子然后也是在全程的拍摄过程当中，都是在流泪
His wife was crying during the whole process of shooting
pāi zhào zhǐ shì yī gè jié guǒ
拍照只是一个结果
Picture is just the result

跟我进行交流，他们在不断地释放自己的压力
While communicating with me, they kept releasing their pressure
ràng tā men huì gǎn shòu dào yī fèn wēn nuǎn yī fèn wēn qíng
让他们会感受到一份温暖，一份温情
And they could feel warmth
hěn duō rén huì shān rán lèi xià
很多人会潸然泪下
A lot of people shed tears
dàn zuì hòu huì gǎn xiè wǒ
但最后会感谢我
But they were grateful to me in the end
wǒ shì yī míng yī shēng wǒ bù néng sǒng
我是一名医生，我不能怂
I’m a doctor so I can’t flinch
wǒ huì zài tā men zuì cuì ruò de shí hòu tí gōng yī gè zuì guǒ duàn de zhì liáo fāng fǎ
我会在他们最脆弱的时候提供一个最果断的治疗方法
I would offer them a therapy decisively when they are the most vulnerable
wēn nuǎn hé lěng jìng shì bù xiāng máo dùn de
温暖和冷静是不相矛盾的
It’s possible to be warm and calm at the same time
yǐ qián kàn bìng shì zài zhēn zhèng zài kàn yī gè bìng
以前看病是在真正在看一个病
When I saw a patient before, I only saw the disease
yī gè chuáng hào jiù néng gòu tì dài suǒ yǒu de yī qiè
一个床号就能够替代所有的一切
A bed number represented all
wā jué dào le tā men fēi cháng dú tè de gù shì zhī hòu
挖掘到了他们非常独特的故事之后
After I knew their unique stories
yuán lái měi gè rén dōu shì rú cǐ bù tóng
原来每个人都是如此不同
I found that everyone is so different
wǒ zhè gè shè yǐng xiàng mù qǐ míng jiù shì rén zài yī yuàn
我（这个摄影项目）起名就是《人在医院》
I name my shooting project ‘People in Hospital’
nà nǐ yě kě yǐ lǐ jiě wèi zhè shì yī gè yī shēng de níng shì
那你也可以理解为这是一个医生的凝视
You can also consider it as the stare from a doctor

我希望能够以医院为一个节点
I hope I can show the realest living state of ordinary people

With hospital as the setting
