When I first accepted the role of Empress Dowager Cixi

我也做了很多的阅读的工作吧

I read a lot about her

kě shì měi yī bù shū nǐ kàn tā men dōu shì miáo xiě tā zěn me zhuān héng bà dào

可是每一部书，你看他们都是描写她怎么专横霸道

But in every book, I found description about her arbitrariness

zěn me yǒu yīn móu guǐ jì

怎么有阴谋诡计

Her schemes and plots

qí shí ne tā shì yī gè fēi cháng ài měi de nǚ xìng

其实呢，她是一个非常爱美的女性

When actually she was very into her looks

chuān yī fú yě hěn jiǎng jiū

穿衣服也很讲究

And she cared about her clothing

chī dōng xī yě hěn jiǎng jiū

吃东西也很讲究

Also she was fastidious about her food

hái yǒu tā de ài yì shù ài xué shí

还有她的爱艺术、爱学识

And she loved art and knowledge

zhè shì zuì zuì kāi xīn de yī cì gōng zuò

"这是最最开心的一次工作"

“It’s been lovely working with you”

xī wàng yǐ hòu hái yǒu jī huì

"希望以后还有机会"

“Hopefully we can work together again”

Unlike other translator ladies

When I translated in a dark room

It’s like my one-man show

所以弄到后来就有些人来买票

Gradually I earned myself some fans

就说“我要买卢小姐的票”

They would specifically ask for my tickets

我在里头自己就(演得)很过瘾

I had such a good time doing the one-man shows

我的妈妈是一位很了不起的表演艺术家

My mother was an excellent actress

wǒ cóng xiǎo shòu dào tā de xùn liàn

我从小受到她的训练

And I was trained by her since I was a girl

kàng zhàn de shí qī nián shì zhù zài méi lán fāng jiā de

抗战的时期，9年是住在梅（兰芳）家的

During the war I lived at the Mei’s house for 9 years

kě shì wǒ ne tā men jué dé wǒ méi yǒu zhè fāng miàn de cái néng

可是我呢，他们觉得我没有这方面的才能

But they didn’t think I was talented acting-wise

shuō wǒ méi yǒu yì shù de xì bāo

说我没有艺术的细胞

They said I was not built for art

wǒ méi yǒu zhè gè zī gé qù yǎn xì

我没有这个资格去演戏

And I was not qualified for that

zài hǎo lái wù wǒ yào xiǎng jìn rù zhè xíng

在好莱坞，我要想进入这行

When I tried to make my way into the business

jié guǒ hěn nán

结果很难

I met quite a few difficulties

shān lù zhè gè jù běn ne shì yī gè kàng zhàn piàn zi hēi bái piàn

《山路》这个剧本呢是一个抗战片子，黑白片

“The Mountain Road” is a war film, black and white

quán shì jiè zhāo yǎn yuán bǐ jiào yī xià

全世界招演员比较一下

And they were auditioning

shì jìng de qián yī tiān mā mā gěi wǒ xǔ duō de zhǐ dǎo

试镜的前一天，妈妈给我许多的指导

The day before it, my mother gave me lots of advice

shì jìng yǐ hòu hěn chéng gōng

试镜以后很成功

And it turned out very successful

wǒ nà shí hòu wén bǐ hěn hǎo

我那时候文笔很好

I was a good writer then

yǒu de míng xīng hěn xiǎo de shí hòu xiàng bù chū míng de shí hòu

有的明星很小的时候，像不出名的时候

Some stars, before they became famous

chū yǎn tóu yī gè piàn zi wǒ men jiù cǎi fǎng

(出演)头一个片子我们就采访

We would interview them when they first made appearance

dào xiàn zài tā men yǐ jīng chéng dà míng xīng le

到现在他们已经成大明星了

And now when they are huge

jiù kàn tā men zhè me duō nián lái de biàn huà yě hěn yǒu yì sī

就看他们这么多年来的变化，也很有意思

It’s interesting to see how they have changed

And I also wrote about politics

我还去参加了

I was there

wǒ xiě de dù lǔ mén gēn mài kè ā sè zài zhōng tú dǎo huì miàn

我写的杜鲁门跟麦克阿瑟在中途岛会面

I wrote about the meeting of Truman and MacArthur on the Midway Islands

sòng měi líng èr zhàn hòu dì yī cì dào měi guó lái de shí hòu wǒ yě qù cǎi fǎng tā le

宋美龄二战后第一次到美国来的时候，我也去采访她了

And I interviewed Soong Mei-ling when she first visited the US after World War II

也挺开心的

That was quite fun

不过她也不知道我是谁

But she didn’t know who I was

zěn me zhè gè xiǎo yā tóu pǎo lái xiàn huā gěi wǒ zhào xiāng

And why I took photo of her and gave her flowers

从前我的母亲说我太笨了

My mother used to say that I was silly

她说你这个脑子太简单了

She said you are simple-minded

nǐ yào shì zuò chéng yī gè hǎo jiǎo ér de huà

你要是做成一个好角儿的话

Even if you became a good actress

nǐ yě bù néng yīng fù nǐ de huán jìng

你也不能应付你的环境

You would not be smart enough to cope

dàn shì nǐ zuò bù dào zuì hǎo nǐ hé bì qù zuò ne

但是你做不到最好，你何必去做呢

But you can’t make it to the top, why you even try

nǐ de suàn xué hěn hǎo nǐ rén hěn chéng shí

你的算学很好，你人很诚实

Your are good in math, you are honest

nǐ yīng gāi dào yín xíng jiè qù zuò

你应该到银行界去做

You should work in a bank

qí shí tā cuò le

其实她错了

But she was wrong

yīn wèi tā méi yǒu jìn dào nà gè xíng tā bù le jiě

因为她没有进到那个行，她不了解

Because she was not there, she didn’t know

nà me xiàn zài wǒ huó dào suì

那么现在我活到93岁

Now that I’m 93 years old

wǒ jiù jué dé zhǐ yào zuò yī gè lǎo lǎo shí shí de rén jiù hǎo le

我就觉得只要做一个老老实实的人就好了

I think being an honest woman is good enough

zài wǒ zhè gè nián jì néng gòu gēn yì shù dà jiā

在我这个年纪能够跟艺术大家

At my age, being able to work with these huge artists

hái yǒu xiàn zài de zhuī qiú yì shù de nián qīng de

还有现在的追求艺术的、年轻的

And these young, talented

yǒu wèi de yǒu tiān cái de yǎn yuán zài yī qǐ gōng zuò

有为的、有天才的演员在一起工作

Accomplished actors

nǐ shì yī gè duō me dà de lè qù a

你是一个多么大的乐趣啊

It’s so much fun

xī wàng wǒ hái néng gòu jì xù dì zài wǔ tái shàng biǎo yǎn

希望我还能够继续地在舞台上表演

I hope to stay on the stage
