《诗山河考》这个项目是从 2009 年开始

The Odes project started in 2009

wǒ zhòng fǎng le shī jīng lǐ miàn suǒ shè jí de hěn duō shān chuān hé liú cǎo mù niǎo shòu

我重访了《诗经》里面所涉及的很多山川、河流，草木鸟兽

I revisited lots of mountains, rivers, plants and animals described in the Book of Odes

wǒ shì zhòng xīn gé le duō nián zhī hòu

我是重新隔了 2200 多年之后

It was a revisit

qù zuò de yī cì huí fǎng

去做的一次回访

After over 2,200 years

wǒ jiào tǎ kě

dāng shí zài zhōng yāng měi yuàn de shí hòu shì xué de shì chún yì shù

当时在中央美院的时候是学的是纯艺术

I was majored in art in the Central Academy of Fine Arts

zhōng tú de shí hòu jiù zhuǎn xué chū guó le

中途的时候就转学出国了

I transferred to another college in the midway

rán hòu zài niǔ yuē

然后在纽约

Then in New York

dāng shí jiù kàn le hěn duō gǔ dài de bǐ jì hái yǒu bāo kuò shī jīng zài nèi

当时就看了很多古代的笔记，还有包括《诗经》在内

I read lots of annotations about ancient books including the Book of Odes (Shijing)

bǐ rú shuō guān guān jū jiū zài hé zhī zhōu

比如说“关关雎鸠，在河之洲”

For example, ‘The waterfowl would coo upon an islet in the brook’

zhè gè hé zhōu dào dǐ zài nǎ ér

这个河洲到底在哪儿

Then where on earth are the brook and the islet

zhè zhǒng shuǐ niǎo shì nǎ zhǒng

这种水鸟是哪种

And what kind of waterfowl is that

yǒu hěn duō měi hǎo de nà zhǒng yì xiàng zài nǎo zi lǐ

有很多美好的那种意象在脑子里

There’re lots of beautiful images in my mind

rán hòu nián jiù jué dìng huí guó xiān kàn yī kàn

然后09年就决定回国先看一看

Then in 2009 I decided to return to China and tried to look for them

shī jīng yǒu yī gòng shì guó fēng

《诗经》有一共是15国风

The Book of Odes contains ballads from around 15 kingdoms

zhǔ yào shì zhōng yuán dì qū de yī xiē shěng shì

主要是中原地区的一些省市

Which are mainly provinces and cities in the Zhongyuan area

wǒ dì yī pī qù de jiù shì shī jīng lǐ de dì fāng shì shǎn xī

我第一批去的就是《诗经》里的地方是陕西

The first place in the Book of Odes I went to was Shaanxi

duō nián qián xī zhōu de guó dōu

2000多年前西周的国都

Where the capital of the Western Zhou Dynasty was located over 2,000 years ago

yǒu yī shǒu shī jiào dà yǎ líng tái

有一首诗叫《大雅·灵台》

There’s a poem named ‘Daya, Lingtai’

jiù shì zhōu wén wáng hào zhào dà jiā qǐ lái xiū jiàn yī gè líng tái guān chá xīng xiàng

就是周文王号召大家起来修建一个灵台，观察星象

Which described King Wen of Zhou calling for the construction of an observatory (lingtai in ancient Chinese) to watch stars

zài táng cháo de shí hòu tā jiù biàn chéng le yī gè hěn yǒu míng de sì miào

在唐朝的时候，它就变成了一个很有名的寺庙

It became a renowned temple in the Tang Dynasty

xiàn zài wǒ qù nà gè dì fāng

现在我去那个地方

When I went to that place

shàng miàn jiù yǒu gè hěn xiǎo hěn pò bài de yī gè ní gū ān

上面就有个很小、很破败的一个尼姑庵

There was just a tiny and dilapidated nunnery

zhǐ yǒu liǎng sān gè lǎo de shī fù

只有两三个老的师父

Housing only two or three old nuns

liǎng qiān duō nián guò qù le

两千多年过去了

Over two thousand years have passed

zhè gè dì fāng zhè gè gǎi biàn zhēn de shì

这个地方这个改变真的是

The place has really changed

fēi cháng zěn me shuō

非常怎么说

How to describe it

nǐ huì zhàn dào yī gè gèng gāo de jiǎo dù qù kàn rén lèi lì shǐ de zhè zhǒng biàn qiān

你会站到一个更高的角度去看人类历史的这种变迁

You would see such a change in the human history from a higher level

hàn shuǐ hé hěn kuān

汉水河很宽

The Hanshui River was broad

tā men huì zài hé lǐ miàn fàng hé dēng

他们会在河里面放河灯

They put lanterns in the river

lái huái niàn niú láng zhī nǚ

来怀念牛郎织女

To remember Niulang and Zhinv

hé lǐ miàn de guāng de guǐ dào

河里面的光的轨道

The light tracks in the river

shì hé dēng huà chū lái de guǐ dào

是河灯划出来的轨道

Were made by the lanterns

shè yǐng lǐ jiào zhǎng pù guāng

摄影里叫长曝光

It’s called long exposure in photography

dàn yě tè bié duì yīng shī jīng lǐ de yóu nǚ zěn me yě guò bù qù de zhè zhǒng gǎn jué

但也特别对应《诗经》里的“游女”怎么也过不去的这种感觉

But the picture also echoes Younv who couldn’t cross the river as described in the Book of Odes

wǒ dāng shí shì shàng sì rì zhè tiān lái dào qín hé hé wěi hé zhè biān de

我当时是上巳日这天来到溱河和洧河这边的

I came to the Zhen River and Wei River on the Shangsi day

gǔ dài de chéng qiáng de yí cún

古代的城墙的遗存

Down the remains of ancient walls

zhǎng zhe dāng shí nà zhǒng yě lán huā

长着当时那种野兰花

There were some wild orchids

hǎo xiàng hái shì néng xiù dào dāng shí chūn qiū shí hòu nà gè qì xī

好像还是能嗅到当时春秋时候那个气息

It felt like you still breathed in the smell of the Spring and Autumn Period

zhōu yuán qí shí yǒu diǎn xiàng yī gè hěn dà hěn dà de yí jì

周原，其实有点像一个很大很大的遗迹

Zhouyuan were actually huge ruins

wǒ shì zuān dào le tā men shāo zhuān de fèi qì de yáo lǐ miàn

我是钻到了他们烧砖的废弃的窑里面

I got in the deserted brickkiln

rán hòu wǎng shàng pāi de

然后往上拍的

And shot upward

tè bié yǒu yī zhǒng chuān yuè zhè zhǒng lì shǐ de shí jiān de gǎn jué

特别有一种穿越这种历史的时间的感觉

It really felt like going back to the old times

wǒ qù zhè gè shān de shí hòu

我去这个山的时候

When I visited the mountain

dà gài zhè gè shān zhǐ shèng le le

大概这个山只剩了1/4了

There was only 1/4 of it left

rán hòu dōu shì nà gè dì fāng jiàn yī gè cǎi shí chǎng

然后3/4都是那个地方建一个采石厂

3/4 of it was planned for a quarry

zhè gè shān yǐ jīng huàn le lìng wài yī zhǒng xíng shì

这个山已经换了另外一种形式

The mountain has taken on another form

biàn chéng le hěn duō gāng jīn shuǐ ní de zhè zhǒng chéng shì sēn lín lái péi bàn wǒ men

变成了很多钢筋水泥的这种城市森林，来陪伴我们

Into an urban forest of steel and concrete to company us

zhè xiē zhōng yuán dì qū de jǐng xiàng

这些中原地区的景象

The scenes in the Zhongyuan area

jī běn dōu shì rén duì zhè gè dì fāng

基本都是人对这个地方

Are basically results

jìn xíng le wú shù cì de zhòng fù de gǎi zào

进行了无数次的重复的改造

Of numerous repetitive changes

suǒ yí liú xià lái de yī gè jié guǒ

所遗留下来的一个结果

By human

zì rán gēn rén qí shí bù tíng dì zài bó yì

自然跟人其实不停地在博弈

In fact, the nature has been confronting men

jǐ cì huí guó dōu jué dé zhōng guó zhèng zài fā shēng yī gè

几次回国都觉得中国正在发生一个

Through my several returns to China

kě néng shuō shì fān tiān fù dì de biàn huà

可能说是翻天覆地的变化

I feel it was undertaking a dramatic change

shì yī gè yǐng xiàng de fù kuàng

是一个“影像的富矿”

It’s a ‘rich ore of photographs’

pāi le yīng gāi shì juǎn

拍了应该是845卷

I’ve shot about 845 rolls of film

měi juǎn zhāng

每卷12张

12 pieces each roll

zuì hòu xuǎn le zhāng

最后选了108张

I chose 108 pictures in the ends

bǎ bó jīn de lì zi zuò chéng yī zhǒng róng yè

把铂金的粒子做成一种溶液

I turned platinum granules into a kind of solution

yòng tā lái zuò gǎn guāng yuán jiàn

用它来做感光元件

To make photosensitive elements

céng cì fēi cháng fēng fù

层次非常丰富

Which produced plentiful layers

bó jīn tā de wěn dìng xìng fēi cháng gāo

铂金，它的稳定性非常高

Platinum is highly stable

yǐ hòu zhǐ yào zhè zhāng zhǐ hái zài

以后只要这张纸还在

In the future as long as the piece of paper exists

tā de yǐng diào shì yǒng yuǎn dōu bù huì gǎi biàn

它的影调是永远都不会改变

Its tone would never change

tā yǒu diǎn gēn shí jiān běn shēn qù kàng zhēng de yì sī

它有点跟时间本身去抗争的意思

It kinda feels like fighting against time

wǒ suǒ yǒu de xiàng mù dōu shì gēn gǔ jīn yǒu diǎn guān xì

我所有的项目都是跟古今有点关系

All of my projects deal with the past and now to some extent

《黄易》这个项目是2014、2015年的时候

The project Huangyi was done in 2014 and 2015

zhòng xīn tàn xún le qīng dài de jīn shí xué jiā huáng yì

重新探寻了清代的金石学家黄易

It’s a re-exploration of Huangyi, a scholar in ancient bronzes and stone tablets in the Qing Dynasty

tā céng jīng suǒ shè jí dào de yī xiē fǎng bēi de dì diǎn

他曾经所涉及到的一些访碑的地点

Some of the sites of his stele searches

fēi cháng xiàng wǒ men xiàn zài dǎ kǎ yī yóu zhè zhǒng dōng xī

非常像我们现在打卡一游这种东西

It resembles today’s ‘I was here’ travel a lot

dāng shí shì pāi shè le zhāng zhào piàn

当时是拍摄了13,000张照片

I shot 13,000 pictures then

cóng lǐ miàn xuǎn zé le zhāng zuò pǐn

从里面选择了26张作品

And chose 26 among them

dòng tiān fú dì zhè gè xiàng mù shì cóng nián kāi shǐ

“洞天福地”这个项目是从2017年开始

The project ‘Grotto-Heavens’ started in 2017

zhǔ yào tàn fǎng zhōng guó de shí dà dòng tiān sān shí liù xiǎo dòng tiān

主要探访中国的“十大洞天”“三十六小洞天”

It was mainly a trip to China’s ‘Ten Big Grottos’ and ‘Thirty-six Small Grottos’

xiāng chuán zhè jǐ shí gè dòng tiān xià miàn dōu yǒu guǎn dào huò zhě dào lù

相传这几十个洞天下面都有管道，或者道路

Reportedly there’re channels or paths beneath the dozens of caves

kě yǐ hù xiāng jiāo liú

可以互相交流

And they connect to each other

tā shì lìng wài yī gè shì jiè de suō yǐng

它是另外一个世界的缩影

It’s the miniature of another world

bù guǎn shì fǎng bēi hái shì fǎng gǔ

不管是访碑还是访古

Visiting either steles or historical sites

zài gǔ dài dōu shì yī gè fēi cháng zhǔ liú de yī zhǒng wén huà xiàn xiàng

在古代都是一个非常主流的一种文化现象

Was a mainstream cultural phenomenon in the ancient times

zài wǒ men xiàn zài de yì shù

在我们现在的艺术

But it’s in a minority

fǎn ér shì fēi cháng xiǎo zhòng

反而是非常小众

In modern art

yīn wèi cāng lǐn shí zhī lǐ jié ma

因为“仓廪实，知礼节”嘛

Because ‘Full granaries lead to the awareness of etiquette’

wǒ men suī rán lí nà gè dōng xī hěn yuǎn

我们虽然离那个东西很远

Although we’re very far away from them

rán hòu yě duàn jué le hěn duō chuán tǒng

然后也断绝了很多传统

And we are disconnected to lots of traditions

dàn shì yǒu xiē dōng xī tā shì kě yǐ cóng tǔ lǐ miàn shēng fā chū lái de

但是有些东西，它是可以从土里面生发出来的

Some things can grow from the earth
