This building is an art gallery that I designed for my parents

可以说是我自己的第一个作品

Arguably my first work

这边是在（北京）顺义区

It's located in Shunyi District of Beijing

fù mǔ nián jì jiàn zhǎng

父母年纪渐长

My parents are getting older

xī wàng tā men zài shēng huó shàng dōu shì fēi cháng fāng biàn de xiāng hù zhào gù

希望他们，在生活上都是非常方便的相互照顾

I hope they can live in a place where it's convenient for them to take care of each other

néng gòu dōu yǒu gè zì dú lì de gōng zuò shì

能够都有各自独立的工作室

Where they can have their own independent studios

zhè gè jiàn zhù shì yī xì liè de qiáng jiā zhù bù tóng hòu dù de hé zi

这个建筑是一系列的墙，夹著不同厚度的盒子

The building is an array of walls with boxes of different sizes in between

zuì kāi shǐ shè jì shì zài nián de xià tiān

最开始设计是在2013年的夏天

I started designing in the summer of 2013

zuì zhōng shì zài nián nián dǐ wán chéng

最终是在2016年年底（完成）

And finished by the end of 2016

入口一进来是中庭

The entrance leads to the atrium

shì liǎng gè qū yù gōng zuò hé xiū xī de guò dù de yī gè kōng jiān

是两个区域（工作和休息）的过渡的一个空间

A transition space between two areas (work and rest)

yǒu yī gè shàn xíng de zhǎn kāi

有一个扇形的展开

There is a fan-shaped room

zǎo shàng xià wǔ de shí hòu yáng guāng dōu fēi cháng chōng pèi

早上下午的时候，阳光都非常充沛

Receiving plenty of sunshine in morning and afternoon

fù qīn gōng zuò shì shì zài yī céng zài zuì xī biān

父亲工作室是在一层，在最西边

My father's studio is on the ground floor, on the westside

gāo dù shì jiē jìn mǐ

高度是接近7米

About 7 meters in height

fù qīn shì yī gè guó huà jiā

父亲是一个国画家

He is a traditional Chinese painter

duì yú guāng xiàn de yào qiú qí shí bù shì fēi cháng mǐn gǎn

对于光线的要求其实不是非常敏感

His creation is not very light-sensitive

tā yǒu hěn duō fēi cháng jù fú de zuò pǐn zuì dà dào mǐ de zuò pǐn

他有很多非常巨幅的作品，最大到5×10米的作品

He has a lot of very large works, up to 5 x 10 meters

yǒu yī gè qīng gōng yè jí bié de qǐ zhòng chē

有一个轻工业级别的起重车

There is a light industrial lifter

tā jīng cháng shì yào zhàn zài zhè gè chē shàng miàn qù chuàng zuò

他经常是要站在这个车上面，去创作

For him to stand on and paint 23

My mother is an oil painter

Her studio is on the upper floor

墙面上是专门设计了一个运输画的画槽

The slot on the wall is specially designed for transporting paintings

kě yǐ jiè zhù huá guǐ jiāng gāo chù de huà miàn qù jiàng xià lái

可以借助滑轨将高处的画面去降下来

She can use the rails to lower the high paintings

suī rán tā men shì fū qī dàn duì yú sī mì xìng yào qiú fēi cháng gāo

虽然他们是夫妻，（但）对于私密性要求非常高

Being husband and wife, they still needs privacy

bù xī wàng zì jǐ de chuàng zuò

不希望自己的创作

They don't want their paintings

huì bèi lìng wài yī gè rén zài bù tíng dì guān mó

会被另外一个人在不停地观摩

To be constantly exposed to another pair of eyes

shén zhì dōu bù xī wàng qiáng miàn shì gòng yòng de

甚至都不希望墙面是共用的

They even can't accept shared walls

suǒ yǐ tā men liǎng gè gōng zuò shì zhī jiān

所以他们两个工作室之间

So between the two studios

zuò le yī gè dú lì de yī gè zhǎn tīng

做了一个独立的一个展厅

I inserted an independent exhibition hall

yīn wèi wǒ bà bà mā mā dōu hěn xǐ huān dǎ pīng pāng qiú

因为我爸爸妈妈都很喜欢打乒乓球

My parents love to play Ping Pong

zài zhè biān yě fàng le yī gè pīng pāng qiú tái

在这边也放了一个乒乓球台

So there is a Ping Pong table

tā men yě kě yǐ gè zì qù yùn dòng

他们也可以各自去运动

They have individual exercise options as well

dì xià shì de zhǎn tīng shì zhōng jiān de gāo tiāo kōng de zhǔ zhǎn tīng

地下室的展厅，是中间的高挑空的主展厅

The basement hall is the main exhibition hall

My father is a thoughtful person

èr céng yǒu yī gè tā zì jǐ sī mì de yī gè xiǎo de tíng yuàn

二层有一个他自己私密的一个小的庭院

On the second floor he has a private courtyard

yī gè nèi xiàng xíng de yī gè kōng jiān

一个内向型的一个空间

An introverted space

wǒ mǔ qīn shì yī gè gèng jiā kāi lǎng de rén

我母亲，是一个更加开朗的人

My mother on the other hand is a more cheerful person

yě zhǒng le hěn duō tā xǐ huān de bù tóng de zhí wù

也种了很多她喜欢的不同的植物

A variety of plants that she likes are planted

yǒu yī gè gòng yòng de zài wū dǐng de yī gè wán zhěng de lù tái

有一个共用的在屋顶的一个完整的露台

There is a shared terrace on the roof

měi tiān xī yáng de shí hòu huò zhě zǎo shàng de shí jiān

每天夕阳的时候或者早上的时间

At sunset or in the morning

kě yǐ zài shàng miàn qù sàn bù

可以在上面去散步

They can go for a walk up there

shè jì de guò chéng zhōng duì yú kōng jiān

设计的过程中，对于空间

During the designing

wǒ men zhī jiān yǒu hěn duō de bó yì

我们之间有很多的博弈

We went through quite a few games

tā men dì yī cì lái zǒu le yī biàn suǒ yǒu de kōng jiān yǐ hòu

他们第一次来走了一遍所有的空间以后

It was only after they had toured through the building

wǒ zhōng jiān de yī xiē shè xiǎng qí shí tā men cái zhēn zhèng néng gòu tǐ huì dào

我中间的一些设想，其实他们才真正能够体会到

That they could begin to understand my intention of design

yì qíng qī jiān kě néng shì wǒ chéng nián yǐ hòu

疫情期间，可能是我成年以后

The epidemic is probably the longest period of time

hé fù mǔ yī qǐ shēng huó de zuì zhǎng de shí jiān

和父母一起生活的最长的时间

That I've spent with my parents in my adulthood 61

本身我也是独生女

I'm the only child

hěn duō rén yě dōu fēi cháng hǎo qí

很多人也都非常好奇

People are curious

说艺术家夫妇是怎么把孩子养大的

How an artist couple raise they child

zhè gè hé qí tā de fù mǔ méi yǒu rèn hé qū bié

这个和其他的父母没有任何区别

Well, it's not different from any other parents

dàn shì zhēn zhèng de tā men de mǒu yī gè qū yù

但是真正的他们的某一个区域

But there is always a part of them

qí shí wǒ bìng méi yǒu rèn hé de jié jìng qù le jiě

其实我并没有任何的捷径去了解

That I have no shortcut to

tóng yàng shì fù mǔ de zuò pǐn zài měi shù guǎn zhǎn chū

同样是（父母的）作品在美术馆展出

Their work being exhibited in an art museum

wǒ qù cān guān zhè gè zhǎn lǎn

我去参观这个展览

I go to the exhibition

zhè gè jiàn zhù jiàn chéng de shí hòu

这个建筑建成的时候

The building was completed

yě shì wǒ cóng měi guó yán jiū shēng bì yè de nà yī nián

也是我从美国研究生毕业的那一年

The year I finished my graduate study in the US

shàng xué zhè me duō nián qí shí yī zhí dōu shì yǒu fù mǔ de wú xiàn de zhī chí

上学这么多年，其实一直都是有父母的无限的支持

All these years I'd been in school, My parents were very supportive

huí kuì gěi fù mǔ de yī gè zuì hǎo de lǐ wù

回馈给父母的一个最好的礼物

And this is my gift back to them
