十九世纪末叶在法国兴起的颓废主义文艺思潮中的一个主要流派。其理论基础是主观唯心主义，认为现实世界是虚幻的﹑痛苦的，而"另一世界"是真的﹑美的。要求用晦涩难解的语言刺激感官，产生恍惚迷离的神秘联想﹐形成某种"意象"，即所谓"象征"。法国象征派诗人以马拉美﹑魏尔伦等为代表;戏剧方面以梅特林克为代表;美术方面以摩罗为代表。
