MEANING OF 降龍伏虎
to vanquish dragons and tigers (idiom)
Originally a Buddhist story, it refers to the use of force to subdue the dragon and the tiger / The latter metaphor has great ability, able to overcome strong opponents or overcome great difficulties
使龙虎降服驯顺。佛教和道教中都有降龙伏虎的故事。《后汉书.方术传下.徐登》"又赵炳﹐字公阿﹐东阳人﹐能为越方"李贤注引《抱朴子》﹕"道士赵炳﹐以气禁人﹐人不能起。禁虎﹐虎伏地﹐低头闭目﹐便可执缚。"又引《异苑》﹕"赵侯以盆盛水﹐吹气作禁﹐鱼龙立见。"南朝梁慧皎《高僧传.神异下.涉公》﹕"能以秘咒咒下神龙。"唐道宣《续高僧传.习禅一.僧稠》﹕"闻两虎交斗﹐咆响振岩﹐乃以锡杖中解﹐各散而去。"后常以"降龙伏虎"比喻战胜重大困难。
