简称宁”。江苏省省会。在省境西南部、长江沿岸，京沪、宁铜等铁路交会于此。为中国历史文化名城和七大古都之一。古名金陵、建康等。三国吴、东晋、宋、齐、梁、陈、五代南唐、明初、太平天国及民国均建都于此。1927年设市。人口2657万(1995年)。化学工业占全国重要地位。特产云锦、板鸭。名胜古迹有中山陵、明孝陵、灵谷寺、莫愁湖、雨花台、紫金山天文台、南京长江大桥等。有南京大学、东南大学等高等学校。
