魏晋玄学命题。与"言尽意"相对。三国魏荀粲等提出"言不尽意"说﹐认为"象外之意﹐系表之言"都是"藴而不出"的﹐所以"六籍虽存﹐固圣人之糠秕。"见《三国志．魏志．荀彧传》裴松之注引晋孙盛《晋阳秋》。
