语言不能表达思想的全部内容。《易．系辞上》﹕"子曰﹕'书不尽言﹐言不尽意。'"晋欧阳建《言尽意论》﹕"世之论者以为'言不尽意'由来尚矣。"朱自清《诗文评的发展》﹕"原来我们的'求好'的艺术论渊源于道家﹐而道家不信赖语言﹐以为'言不尽意'﹐所以崇尚'无端崖之辞'。"后多用为书信结尾套语﹐表示意有未尽。
魏晋玄学命题。与"言尽意"相对。三国魏荀粲等提出"言不尽意"说﹐认为"象外之意﹐系表之言"都是"藴而不出"的﹐所以"六籍虽存﹐固圣人之糠秕。"见《三国志．魏志．荀彧传》裴松之注引晋孙盛《晋阳秋》。
